#22 Alabama Edges Past Utah, 4-3, In Overtime

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - #22 Alabama beat Utah, 4-3, in overtime in the first of a two-game series on Friday night. Senior Jack Rooney earned a hat trick and freshman Garret Kingsbury stopped 35 shots in last night's contest.
The first period held back-and-forth action and great saves by both team’s goaltenders. Ryan Johnson received a penalty 5:51 into the first period and Utah’s David Barnes was able to take advantage to score on the power play.
A minor penalty was called on Utah with 8:16 left to play in the first. Johnson responded with a power play goal to tie the game, 1-1, at the end of the period.
Just four minutes into the second, Marc Demers received a penalty for interference and shortly after, Utah’s Cody West was sent to the box for tripping. The period went scoreless and the game remained tied, 1-1, going into the third.
Jack Rooney scored unassisted with 11:27 left to play in the game and put Alabama in the lead by one goal. Seconds later, Demers was sent to the box for boarding. Utah responded on the power play with back-to-back goals to take Alabama’s lead.
With just 1:53 remaining in the game, Rooney scored again with assists from Lovorn and Dylan Teed to tie the game, 3-3. Rooney scored once more in overtime to earn a hat trick and win the game for Alabama, 4-3.
