GAME #21 - ILLINOIS STATE 3, #23 ALABAMA 4
PELHAM, Ala. – Alabama defeated Illinois State University, 4-3, in the first of a two-game series on Friday night. Sam Messina scored his first goal of this season in tonight’s meeting.
The first period was full of action. ISU’s Robert Kalata scored the first goal of the game just 3:58 into the first period. Shortly after, ISU’s DJ Mussey and James Benedetto received back-to-back penalties for slashing.
With 4:34 left to play in the first, Dylan Teed struck the first goal for Alabama with an assist from Jack Rooney. The Redbirds’ Trevor Hansen responded just 30 seconds later to put the puck in the net and raise ISU’s lead to one goal.
ISU’s Max Puscheck and Vaughan Kavanaugh received simultaneous minor penalties with 4:03 left to play in the first. Minutes later, Rooney scored with an assist from Sam Messina to tie the game, 2-2, at the end of the first.
About halfway through the second period, ISU’s Connor Boscaccy received a minor penalty for boarding and Jeremy Hannah was sent to the box for a ten minute unsportsmanlike conduct. With 3:26 left in the period, Sam Messina scored with assists from Dylan Teed and Jack Rooney, and put Alabama in the lead for the first time in the game.
With 4:29 left in the game, two Alabama players and two ISU players were all sent to the box for minor penalties. ISU’s Mike Kavanaugh cut Alabama’s lead to 4-3 about a minute later and with an assist from Joseph Bower. Illinois State pulled its goaltender to add another skater with 1:24 left but was unable to score.
