GAME #19 - #27 JOHN CARROLL 2, #22 ALABAMA 3
Pelham, Ala. - Alabama beat John Carroll University, 3-2, in the first of a two-game series on Friday night. Freshman Ryan Johnson scored his first collegiate goal in tonight’s contest and freshman Garret Kingsbury earned his first shootout win.
The first period went scoreless with both teams taking five shots on goal each. With 15:31 left in the period, John Carroll’s Evan Kreuger was sent to the penalty box for tripping.
The second period saw more action on the ice with a penalty called on the Blue Streaks just three minutes in. Minutes later, Taylor Bowman took advantage of the power play and struck the first goal of the game. The assist was credited to Nick Messina.
With 12:02 left in the second, both Dylan Teed and John Carroll’s Jake Denner received simultaneous penalties for rouging. The Blue Streaks’ Daniel Kral scored with an assist from Joe Lane and 4:49 left on the clock. The teams remained tied, 1-1, at the end of the second period.
Immediately into the third period, Ryan Johnson scored his first collegiate goal with an assist from Pierre Ouellette and put Alabama in the lead by one. With 2:14 left on the clock, the Blue Streaks’ Max Zweirlien was sent to the penalty box and moments later, the Blue Streaks scored a short-handed goal and tied the game.
Taylor Bowman scored the game winning goal in the shootout and after Garret Kingsbury’s great save, Nick Messina followed with an isolation goal to secure the win.
