Alabama Hockey Adds Ryan Johnson
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Hockey Club has added freshman forward Ryan Johnson out of Weston, Conn., to the roster for the spring semester. Johnson enrolled at the University in the fall semester and is now eligible to play for the program.
“I chose to play hockey at Alabama in order to continue playing at a high level of competition while receiving a quality education at the same time,” Johnson said. “I’ve been practicing with the guys for the past couple of weeks now, and I’m looking forward to getting into the lineup to contribute in any way possible.”
Johnson attended Weston High School, but played under head coach Todd Sharinn at Staples High School where he was a state finalist in the 2015-16 season. In three years, he put up 150 points (67 G, 83 A) over 69 games. He was named team captain for his junior and senior seasons then led the team in points and was named team MVP in both campaigns.
He played his junior hockey for the Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack and the Southern Connecticut Stars. Johnson won a state title and appeared in the national tournament with the Stars in both 2015 and 2016, winning the national title in 2016.
“He’s an extremely crafty, skilled forward,” head coach Kyle Richards said. “He brings a high compete level and has a knack for creating offense any time he has the puck.”
