#18 Alabama Drops Second Game at Arkansas

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – The No. 18 Alabama hockey program was swept in Springdale, Ark. on Saturday, dropping the second game against Arkansas, 6-5. Senior Jack Rooney and junior Dylan Teed each recorded multi-point games, and Rooney extended his point streak to six games.

Alabama’s power play kept the team in the game, though it never led. The power play unit finished 3-of-4 on the day and tied the game twice.

The Razorbacks took control in the first period, taking a 3-1 lead despite taking the frame’s only penalty. That infraction allowed junior Stephen MacInnis to open the scoring for Alabama with the man-advantage and tie the game at 1-1 before Arkansas struck twice to close the period.

Rooney and Teed scored within 30 seconds of each other early in the second period to tie the game at three goals apiece, but Arkansas’ Luc Gradisar answered just 29 seconds later. Arkansas would hold at least a one-goal lead for the remainder of the game. Tobias Sjolund extended the Arkansas lead to 5-3 with 5:35 left in the middle frame.

Alabama scored quickly to open the third as senior Jon Lovorn found the net just 2:04 into the period cutting the deficit to just one goal. Arkansas scored three minutes later to regain a two-goal lead. With 11:25 to play, Alabama again found itself on the power play and capitalized on the opportunity. Rooney scored with assists from senior Jeremy Hannah and Teed to make it a 6-5 game with 10:32 on the clock.

The final 10 minutes saw plenty of opportunities for Alabama, including a shot from sophomore Andrew Durkin that appeared to have gone in, but was ruled no goal by the officials after they gathered for a conference. Alabama pulled freshman goalie Garret Kingsbury, who was making his first career start, with just over a minute to play but could not find an equalizer.

Alabama travels to Rutgers next week for its first ever meeting with the Scarlet Knights. The teams will open the series on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. CT.
